While many of the areas we look at are formally proposed to our Science Committee and approved, some sites just don’t meet all the requirements and are not formally proposed. This is usually due to the small size or ephemeral nature of these sites. However, many of these sites are still very significant habitat for native birds and we would like to still recognize the contribution these areas make.

What we have decided to do is create a separate status that the Arizona IBA program can award for such areas; Sites of Conservation Significance.

Maricopa Burrowing Owl Haven

This is private land in Maricopa surrounded by Agriculture land. Doug Loney, the owner had put a good deal of effort into establishing this area as wildlife habitat with lush vegetation. As a result he gets lots of birds on his property including Burrowing Owls.

Here is an eBird Checklist from a Tucson Audubon field trip to this property, we saw 10 different Burrowing Owls!

Doug Loney

eBird Checklist

Burrowing Owl Haven – Doug Loney’s Property, Pinal County, Arizona, US

Tue Apr 16, 2013 6:21 AM

Comments: Tucson Audubon Field Trip to Doug Loney’s property – Maricopa Burrowing Owls
Submitted from BirdLog NA for iOS, version 1.5.2

26 species total

7 Gambel’s Quail

1 Black Vulture

4 Turkey Vulture

10 Eurasian Collared-Dove

20 White-winged Dove

7 Mourning Dove

1 Greater Roadrunner

10 Burrowing Owl

1 Black-chinned Hummingbird

1 Broad-billed Hummingbird

The Adjacent field where many Burrowing Owls can be found

3 Common Raven

4 Barn Swallow

3 Verdin

2 Northern Mockingbird

2 Curve-billed Thrasher

1 European Starling

1 Yellow-rumped Warbler

50 Brewer’s Sparrow (breweri)

5 Lark Sparrow

4 White-crowned Sparrow

1 Black-headed Grosbeak

10 Red-winged Blackbird

1 Brown-headed Cowbird

1 Hooded Oriole

3 House Finch

25 House Sparrow

Birders are invited to visit Doug’s property and see Burrowing Owls but it is asked that you call first, his number is (520) 233-7564.

Directions to Doug’s Land:

I-10 to the I-8, go west.
